Hey I’m Candice! My wife, Katherine, and I have lived in Augusta, GA for over 15 years now. Fort Gordon was my first and only duty station in the Air Force. I now spend my days working as an analyst. I have had pets all my life and currently have one dog, Indigo. She is a border collie/black lab cross, who will be 14 in January. We also have…a lot of cats!
When I got my first dog as an adult, Tennessee, a 2 ½ year old Australian Cattledog I rescued from the shelter, she was essentially the perfect dog. She loved people and dogs and cats, but that meant I was unprepared for Indigo a few years later, who began instigating fights with Tennessee at just over a year old. Not knowing then how to fix it, we kept them separate and managed with a gated system for years.
I first started learning about positive reinforcement training on my own in 2015, when Tennessee was terminally ill. I found the books “Inside of a Dog” by Alexandra Horowitz and “Bones Would Rain From the Sky” by Suzanne Clothier. I immediately wanted to know more about dog cognition, behavior, and humane training methods. Since then, I have been finding informative books, blogs, and groups, and have learned so much. I am committed to force-free methods. My entire household is happier as a result. (The cats like training, too!) I started apprenticing with Mandy in 2019 and am grateful to continue working with and learning from her.
I plan for dog training to be my post-retirement career. I will spend the next few decades until then continually learning and working toward certifications.
I love helping people learn more about their dog and build their bond, finding their joy together, and setting everyone up for success!
